This weekend it’s one of Wilmington’s most anticipated festivals, Riverfest! The festival, which features street fairs, live music, fireworks, and more kicks off this Friday at 6:00pm.
Riverfest was started in 1979 by Wilmington locals who wanted to showcase Historic Downtown Wilmington along the Cape Fear River. In the 37 years since the festival was founded it has grown tremendously, and now attracts nearly 250,000 people every year.
Friday evening Riverfest opens with a concert featuring Chillin Dixie from 6:00-8:00 and Machine Gun 8:45-11:00. One of the main attractions, the street fair, opens at 9:00am on Saturday and 9:30am on Sunday. On Saturday afternoon the Bloody Mary Regatta takes place on the Cape Fear River, which is always an exciting event. Wrapping up Saturday activities are the fireworks, which happen at 7:30 along the Cape Fear River. Also happening all weekend is the Car Show, BMX Bike Show, a pirate parade along Water Street, live music, and live performances.
