High Seas Dreaming

Since its founding in 2011, YachtVenture has grown into one of the most successful fund-raising events on The Children’s Museum of Wilmington calendar.

This year’s event proved to be the best yet, attracting a record fleet of 15 yachts, a record crowd of more than 400 people, and a record fund-raising total of more than $60,000, according to Kathleen King of The Children’s Museum.

What is YachtVenture? In essence, it’s a way for us landlubbers to get a small taste of adventure on the high seas. Each year for the last six, local yacht owners have opened up their boats to the public for the benefit of The Children’s Museum.

This year’s event was held on Saturday, October 15th at MarineMax in Wrightsville Beach. In addition to the Yacht Crawl, it featured music by Professor DJ Dub, food by Sawmill Catering, a silent auction for a variety of great prizes, and a raffle drawing for a sailing cruise to Barcelona.

The Landfall Foundation is a proud sponsor of The Children’s Museum of Wilmington, which was founded in 1997 to stimulate the imagination and a love of learning and provide an opportunity to explore and better understand art, science and culture.

Landfall Well Prepared for the Storm

story-3

Hurricane Matthew recently visited the east coast. Fortunately, Landfall’s infrastructure is well suited to minimize damage, so the community had no significant storm related problems. In fact, thanks to underground utilities, power was not even lost. The Landfall Council of Associations has a well thought out storm preparation and clean-up plan. Lakes and ponds have their levels lowered before the rains hit, to contain heavy rainfall and reduce any possibility of flooding. Disposal areas within the community are available for storm debris removal and there is an active system of removal from streets and yards to this site.

Steve Hughes, the chief operating officer for the Council, stated that only about 150 trees were downed or damaged and that all streets were open within hours following the passing of the storm. Said Hughes, “I want to thank the entire Landfall Community for their outstanding cooperation and help during the post storm clean-up!”

A Good Bi-Valve to Summer

Posted by

Could there be a better way to say good-bye to summer than an old-fashioned oyster roast in your own backyard?

Just ask the more than 200 Country Club of Landfall members who filled the back lawn of the clubhouse on a splendid October Sunday afternoon to celebrate the start of fall and get their fill of fresh local oysters and plenty of adult beverages.

story-2

The oysters were roasted on a fire in a big hole dug by our Greens Superintendent Jeff Mack and shucked by an expert team from the Country Club of Landfall staff. Beautiful weather, a brilliant sunset and live music from the band Stray Local added to the day’s enjoyment.

The feast was the brainstorm of private events coordinator Megan Foltz and Stephanie Granger of the Country Club of Landfall staff, who consistently find new and imaginative ways to bring together members of all ages for memorable experiences.  Our members enjoyed the feast so much that we ran out of oysters and had to place an emergency order to our friends at Seaview Crab Company to bring us a few more bushels!

“We all had so much fun we’re definitely planning to put this event on our calendar next year,” Megan said.

Holiday Headliners

story-1-photo-1One of the many great things about living in Landfall is the proximity to the many restaurants and to the nightlife in downtown Wilmington.  One of the most popular downtown attractions is The Wilson Center at Cape Fear Community College.  This new, riverfront venue is already being recognized as the premier performance facility in Southeastern North Carolina.

Two of our favorite musicals are headlining the Wilson Center stage this holiday season – Annie on Sunday, November 20 followed by Elf on Wednesday and Thursday, December 14-15. Also coming to the Wilson Center are performances of Schubert and Mozart by the Wilmington Symphony on November 12; Mannheim Steamroller Christmas by Chip Davis on Thursday, November 29; and Wilmington’s own City Ballet production of A Carolina Nutcracker, a homegrown version of Tchaikovsky’s immortal classic, on Saturday and Sunday, December 3-4.story-1-photo-2

In addition, the NC Symphony will pay a visit to the venue, performing Holiday Pops on December 22.

Located on the riverfront campus of Cape Fear Community College, The Wilson Center features a 1500-seat main hall, a 600-seat outdoor conservatory, and a 108-seat studio/blackout theatre. Landfall Realty was a proud supporter of the Wilson Center Capital Campaign in 2014.

For a full schedule of Wilson Center performances, concerts and events, please visit www.cfcc.edu/capefearstage.
