Orange was the color of the day, starting with the hand painted pumpkins by local Landfall artists. The sky, however, was Carolina Blue on Saturday, October 9, which was a day of fun for kids of all ages. Landfall’s annual Fall Festival was another tremendous success raising money for the Kenan Chapel and the Landfall Foundation. Landfall Realty was happy to volunteer at this community wide event, meeting and greeting new found friends as well as familiar property owners. The activities included a plant sale by the Council of Association, games for the children, face painting, and pumpkin painting, along with pony rides and the “Root Beer Float” in its own “boot.”

Landfall’s bluebird friends displayed their bluebird houses, and talked about their bluebird attraction program. There were plenty of arts and crafts items for sale as well as a Landfall Bake Sale that was a huge hit, especially the specialties by our own entrepreneur Kate Costella, owner of Aunt Cake’s Cookies, yum!

The Greek festival began in 1992 and has been growing every year. The average attendance reaches around 20,000 and includes not only Wilmington and New Hanover County residents, but folks from Pender and Brunswick counties as well as visitors from out of state. The proceeds from the festival directly benefit the church and local area charities. This year the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina will be the recipient of the churches generosity, so in addition to having a great time and enjoying some of the most fabulous food of the year, you can feel even better about spending that cash ‘cause it’s all for charity!

The festival includes tours of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Greek dancing performances, Greek cooking demonstrations (yum) and both traditional and popular Greek music. The menu for this event is as extensive as you’d find in any Greek restaurant and the prices are more than reasonable. Fill up at the fest and make sure you take home desserts for the week, heck, take home dinner, too!

St Nicholas is located at 608 S College Avenue and admission is free before 5pm on Friday. After that it will be $3 for Adults, $2 for Seniors and Students, 12 & under free, and one admission covers the entire weekend; do these folks know how to entice us to get to the fest or what? For more information, click on the logo to the left and wave if you see us while you’re there!

On October 8th, the agents and staff of Landfall Realty sponsored a Table at the Pink Ribbon Breakfast at the Wrightsville Beach Holiday Inn Resort. The New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation added the Breakfast event to their luncheon and dinner program three years ago and we are very proud to have been able to participate in this special fund raiser all three years. This wonderful Pink Ribbon group honors those who have survived as well as those who have lost their battle with breast cancer.

Since the inception of the Pink Ribbon events, the NHRMC Foundation has raised over $1,000,000 to help pay for mammograms for uninsured women and to provide comfort bags for those newly diagnosed patients. Many Landfall property owners serve on the volunteer committees that organize and plan this special event. I also saw many of our neighbors in attendance in the room-capacity crowd. This year’s speaker, Connie Hill, is a local survivor whose children attended preschool with mine, so her story was especially touching to me. As I leave this function every year, I marvel at the courage and strength of these women and I find myself ever more grateful for all that is good in my life—family, friends, and most of all—my health.

As chair for this year’s NHRMC Hospital Foundation Gala, our desire is to raise money for the Women and Children’s Center. It is always encouraging to see the fabulous turnout at our local fund raising events and to realize how generous the entire Landfall community has been, and what a wonderful city of Wilmington, NC, we live in, full of devoted men and women of great charity.

For more information on the Battle and all the other entertaining and economical Carolina Beach Boardwalk attractions please go to www.boardwalkmakeover.org or call the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce at (910) 458-8434 and start making new memories the whole family can enjoy!

Just outside the gates of Landfall NC, in any direction you care to travel, you can find something interesting, fun, and educational to do. Case in point? Every Friday at 9:00 AM Audubon NC offers field trips to Mason’s Inlet. These birding tours take you on a hike where you’ll discover the sights and sounds of our unique coastal birds.

Least Terns, Black Skimmers, American Oystercathers and Wilson’s Plovers nest here due to the Mason Inlet Waterbird Management Plan that was developed between New Hanover County, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, to assure the protection of the critical nesting site. The result of that plan was the creation of this 300-acre bird sanctuary which you can tour with Audubon bioligists to see all kinds of North Carolina waterbirds.

Registration is not necessary for these weekly tours, simply meet at the Mason Inlet Information kiosk located off the cul de sac near the Shell Island Resort. About .1 mile south is a public parking lot (there is a fee required to park). Bring binoculars if you have them, sunscreen, a hat and comfortable shoes for walking on the sandy beach and water. For more information call 910.686.7527 or email awood@audubon.org. What a wonderful way to jump start a Wilmington NC weekend!
